4 Schools Maths Trip to St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford

Published on 09 May 2013

On 30th April, 2013, Year 10 students joined their counterparts from Manchester Grammar School, Withington Girls' School and William Hulme's Grammar School on a trip to St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford.

They had a Q&A (question and answer) session with current undergraduate students of Science and Engineering about admissions to St Hugh’s College. They also discovered that admission officers will look at their GCSEs when processing their applications to university.

A Professor of Statistics talked about the evolution of data and a great demand for statisticians in the near future. Students were told that to be able to apply for a statistics course, they need to be strong at mathematics.

Students attended a session delivered by current PhD students from the Department of Computer Science. They talked about their research in internet security, ubiquitous computing and the future of global computer connectivity. Students were informed that there will be a greater demand for computer scientists in their near future to work in the world of computing.

Again, students were advised that they need very good grades in mathematics to study computing courses such as Computer Science, Mathematics and Philosophy.

Our students were a credit to the academy, they asked intelligent questions, showed enthusiasm and were extremely well behaved. Students were inspired by this trip and most of them are thinking about applying to the University of Oxford in future.
