Year 9 Students get valuable insight into Health and Social Care Careers at NHS Event

A group of 15 Year 9 students were inspired to follow careers in healthcare at an NHS Health and Social Care event at Old Trafford for National Careers Week.

They took part in five workshops in nursing, midwifery, dietetics, clinical scientist work and paramedic training.

For the paramedic training they practised basic life support including CPR, rescue breathing and defibrillation.

In Clinical Science, they applied the Science they learnt in school to understand how medical devices such as an ultrasound doppler, pulse-oximeter, ECG and blood pressure monitoring device works, and then practiced using them on their friends.

In Nursing Dietetics, they learnt the importance of nutrition, using their knowledge of nutrients to making balanced healthy meals, and practiced inserting a nasogastric tube for a patient who needed tube feeding.

In Midwifery, they guessed how soon each mother animal was due to give birth, and helped deliver a baby (using a simulation doll).

In Practice Nursing, they performed annual Health MOT checks, including learning how to measure height and weight, calculating Body Mass Index and used medical equipment to listen to a patient's heart and lung sounds.

Our students were accompanied by Mr Dugdale, our School Partnership Officer at Manchester United Foundation, who said students had got a lot out of the experience.

Year 9 student Rahmo Ahmed said: “I really enjoyed this experience it helped me be more aware of my future and education and how important it is. The things I learned included how to do CPR, check heart rate, check a pulse and many more.”

Nafisa Rufai, Year 9 student, said:  “I enjoyed the various activities we did as well as the fun facts we learnt about certain medical jobs. It gave me an insight on what careers I may want to do in the future! My favourite was the engineering medical one where they 3D copy bones or other things in the body. I also really enjoyed the CPR activity in the paramedic/ambulance area. I learnt different skills and how long you should give CPR for.”

Glad to hear everyone had a great time!
