DMSF / M.E.N Wish Campaign

Published on 14 October 2013

The Diane Modahl Sports Foundation (DMSF) is a charitable organisation which works with young people from disadvantaged areas across the North West, enabling them to make the most of themselves in sport, school and life.

The registered charity set up in 2010 by the former international athlete Diane Modahl, helps to bring high quality athletics, coaching and mentoring programmes to young people. They are open, inclusive and committed to inspiring potential in people of all skill levels as well as our champions of tomorrow – in the world of sport and beyond.

Where are we now?

The DMSF has worked with Manchester Academy since 2011 and so far has seen a total of 45 students selected to the programme. In 2012, student Lamiko Thomas, who had been on the programme for just two years qualified for the Sainsbury’s School Games (a multi-sport event for 1600 of the UK’s elite young athletes) as part of the 4 x 400m relay team. The team went on to achieve a Bronze medal.

What do we want to achieve?

  • To continue the good work with the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation (DMSF).
  • To raise the confidence and aspirations of young people at Manchester Academy.
  • To increase the number of students who qualify for regional athletics competitions.

The Manchester Evening News Wish Campaign

The DMSF has been selected as one of the charities for the M.E.N Wish Campaign. This campaign gives not-for-profit organisations in the local area the chance to receive a share of £25,000. The Manchester Evening News are printing 4 tokens each day beginning from Wednesday, 2nd October until Saturday 30th November, 2013.

The DMSF is guaranteed a share of the money, but the size of the share depends on the number of tokens we can collect, so this is where we need your help.

The Manchester Academy community (students, staff, business partners, parents and carers) are all encouraged to help if they can. Every token collected has the potential to add up to putting one child through the DMSF mentoring programme for one year. It could be life changing. The more tokens we collect the more funds we raise, the more kids we can help.

So, if you happen to read the paper, then please look out for these Wish Campaign tokens and bring them in to Manchester Academy no later than Saturday, 30th November, 2013. Even if you just do it once a week it would add to the pile.

Note: the tokens are only available from the paid-for editions of the newspaper, so students are advised to seek permission from the person who bought the paper before they bring them in.

We need everyone’s help to make it a success!

Thank you very much.
