When faced with finding raw materials for a new line of jewellery, Manchester Academy students found the answer right under their feet – literally!
The unusual initiative came about as part of the academy’s relationship with Whitworth Art Gallery, which has for the last three years been working with the Moss Lane East based school’s Key Stage 3 students to deliver the Arts Award.
Part of the award has included a group of 14 student’s setting up their own business under the banner Fresh Made Trade, creating and selling products to the public in the gallery’s shop. Previous creations have included laptop and phone cases using traditional West African designs with a modern twist and personalised bags.
This year to celebrate the opening of the new and extended Whitworth Gallery, Manchester Academy students have used clay from the gallery grounds to create bespoke jewellery including brooches and rings which are now on sale in the shop.
Manchester Academy’s Executive Principal Andy Griffin said:
“We’re incredibly grateful to Whitworth Gallery and its staff for their ongoing guidance and support as part of the Key Stage 3 Arts Award. It gives our students an invaluable insight into not only the actual creation of art, but also the business related side of things including marketing and development.”
