Manchester Academy students go live to the nation on the BBC!

Published on 05 July 2013

As part of Blue Peter’s ‘Grow it, Cook it, Eat it’ segment, six Year 7 students from Manchester Academy went live on national television on Thursday 13th June 2013.

They visited the BBC Studios at Media City, Salford Quays to work with Katherine Kennedy, our valued business partner from Hulme Community Garden Centre, to make some very exiting creations.

Our very talented students, Kieran, Aqil, Georgina, Kiro, Probha and Aimen were split into two teams to work with Katherine and Blue Peter presenters Barney Harwood, Helen Skelton and Barney the dog.

The students successfully made a Butterfly Feeder, Smoothies as well as a Raspberry and Basil Cheesecake from scratch whilst live to the nation.

They gained a valuable insight into how the world of television works and also earned vast expertise in how professionals handle the pressures of being on television. They learnt how to communicate effectively with their audience under pressure, and the importance of team work in order to create a fantastic creation.

The students were treated like VIPs by the Blue Peter team for the whole time they were at the studios. They handled the pressure well and truly were inspirational in their efforts throughout the whole process, starting from their telephone interview to be selected for the show, rehearsals and all the way to the live broadcast!

They were each duly rewarded with the famous Blue Peter Badges which they are all so proud of! These students were a credit to the Academy from start to finish. They truly represented Manchester’s finest.
