Maths Fundraising

Published on 14 January 2013

On Monday, 17th December, 2012, Manchester Academy held the NSPCC Number Day again which involved students participating in a fun Maths Number quiz as well as fundraising for the NSPCC.

This was following on from the previous year in 2011, when we took part in the NSPCC Number Day which made it into the Guinness World Record books for the largest Maths lesson ever!

The format of the latest Number Day quiz involved a selection of questions which students responded by using the numbers that staff wore (stickers/badges) and then wrote them down on their answer sheets. The questions were primarily based on promoting Numeracy and Literacy, for example:

  • Which members of staff are in their prime?
  • Which members of staff are a multiple of 10?
  • Which members of staff are equivalent to a half?
  • Which members of staff have obtuse angles?

Some certificates and prizes were awarded for this number competition, while staff were encourage to participate too.

The original aim was to raise at least £50 in sponsorship for the NSPCC, but that target was surpassed when the final total amounted to £75.

The Maths department have been busy raising money for charity this academic year:

  • In the run-up to Christmas, Year 10 and 11 students donated Christmas cards, food, teabags, biscuits at Cornerstones Homeless Centre;
  • On Friday, 28th September, 2012 in support of Macmillan Cancer Research, we hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning where tea, coffee, fruit juice and cereals were served to staff before school; tea, coffee, juice with cakes and biscuits were also available to staff until lunchtime. A fantastic total of £414.54 was raised in these efforts;

Thank you very much to everyone’s support.
