Project '81 brings back the past

Published on 18 July 2011

On Friday 15th July 2011 a group of Year 9 & 10 students took part in a special educational workshop called ‘Project '81’

What is ‘Project '81’?

The Moss Side riots of 30 years ago had a profound effect on the local and the wider community. ‘Project ‘81’ is a Heritage Lottery Funded project, and part of ‘The Caribbean Carnival of Manchester’. The workshop challenged students to understand and engage with how Moss Side has changed since 1981 and enabled students to unearth material from the archives, discover the facts, create brand new material and develop a deeper understanding.

By the end of the workshops students had used their creativity to write newspaper articles, poems, and raps, whilst others delivered drama sketches and puppet shows to illustrate their understanding of the events from the past.

Danielle said: “The workshop was really good. Coco P was really funny and I loved the use of reggae to tell of the events from 1981”.
