STEM Event: University of Manchester Energy Star Lecture

Published on 26 October 2012

On Wednesday 17th October, students from Year 10 and 11 attended The University of Manchester STAR Lecture: Materials and Nuclear Energy delivered by the Director of Dalton Nuclear Institute, Professor Andrew Sherry.

The GCSE students learnt about the importance of energy and the issues surrounding the sources and supply of it. Professor Sherry discussed the energy mix required to keep the lights on and minimise negative environmental impact. Nuclear energy was covered in depth with information on the key challenges such as:

  • how nuclear energy works;
  • management of radioactive waste, and;
  • importance of materials

The students were told that by the time they graduate from university, there will be several jobs for them in the energy sector as most of the engineers, scientists and technologists will have retired.

Our students were inspired by this lecture and will consider studying a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related course in higher education.
