World Book Day 2011

Published on 04 March 2011

On Thursday, 3rd March, Manchester Academy joined schools nationwide to celebrate World Book Day.

There were plenty of exciting events across different lessons including a book swap, some teachers dressing up as famous literary characters as well as pupils voting for their favourite book on a poll held via the VLE.

Pupils were initially encouraged to bring books from home which they could exchange with others. This was met with immense enthusiasm by the pupils, some of whom brought in seven books each!

Each member of Year 7 and 8 is due to be awarded a book coupon which they can take into a local bookshop and receive a new book for just £1.

The English teachers asked each class to give ideas as to their favourite book. This made up a short list of 8 from which students voted either on the VLE or via the ballot box at break and lunch time. After a total of an astounding 312 votes cast in a very close contest, the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer and Holes by Louis Sachar were in joint second place amassing 18% of the votes each. The winner with 19% was the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

As part of their Literacy Leaders programme, a number of Year 10 students also helped some Year 7 students with their reading while their Pinsent Masons mentors observed them.

Within the English department and across the school, lessons focussed on favourite books and a love of reading. We are so very grateful to all of those involved.

“A big thanks to Mr Higgins for his coordination of all the activities for World Book Day and to all the staff who linked it into their lessons. I've had some really great feedback from the students who appreciated the effort everyone put in,” said Ms Taylor, English Curriculum Area Leader.

Ms Patel, Assistant Principal added, “thanks to everyone involved in World Book Day events yesterday. It was a great success with students enjoying what they were involved in. A particular thanks to Ms Taylor and Mr O’Sullivan.”
